Food.Fashion. Music—- NYC Weather

Winter in NYC- I got my first real taste of NYC weather about two weeks ago… and boy am I in for it. I have lived in Los Angeles for eleven years and the three things that Southern Californians take for granted is the beach, good sushi and the 75 degree weather year-round.  In preparation for my big move in Jan., I figured easing myself into that drastic weather change would be the best form of approach: frost bite and cold, sideways rain, I’m ready for you.

While in NY, I had lunch at an amazing restaurant. I am not a fan of sushi in the big apple.. I feel like maybe one or two places really do it right — Sushi of Gari and Sushi Seki. But even then, you can’t go to either of those restaurants and not spend at least $40-50 per person. In Los Angeles, a dinner at Nagao, in Brentwood, is $70 max for two people and Nagao will be feeding you some of the most delicious pieces of sushi you will ever put in your mouth.

So being the crazy sushi lover that I am, I wanted to try the famous Sushi Yasuda. And I can honestly say, that I did not leave that meal hungry or unimpressed. Sushi Yasuda is a very traditional, Japanese restaurant. You don’t go there and order a California Roll or a Spicy Tuna on Crispy Rice- if you do, the chef might throw fish at you and throw you out. You go to Sushi Yasuda, sit at the sushi bar and order omakase. The fish was incredibly fresh- I had about 15 pieces of sushi- and for two people, the bill was only $150. My personal favorites were the uni and the toro. Now, although $150 is not cheap meal, the way I see it, is that for thirty pieces of sushi, it’s a pretty damn good deal (five pieces of fish at Sushi of Gari is easily $60).

Another spot that people should check out is a great little chocolate shop on the upper east side called K Chocolatier. They have the best truffles around! All of their chocolate is hand-made and 90% of it is dark, so you won’t feel guilty stuffing your face. There are three locations, two in Los Angeles and one in New York, and they ship all over the U.S. You can find their website below. K Chocolatier makes a great holiday gift and their packaging is very classy and beautiful.
